Christmas is that time of year when housemates often pack up and go away to spend a few days with family. But if you can’t get away and you are left alone in your shared house, what do you do? Here is our guide about how to spend Christmas alone in your shared house.
1. Plan Ahead
Don’t wake up on Christmas morning and wonder what to do. Think ahead and get together everything that you might need. Don’t check out of Christmas altogether, plan how to celebrate the day your way.
2. Connect With Those Who Are Around
Reach out to friends or work colleagues who may also be on their own this Christmas. If you can get together, you could cook and share a meal together or have a drink and watch a movie.
If you don’t know anyone else who will be on their own you could check out local events that are being hosted for those alone at this time of year. Or pop into your local pub for a drink and chat with someone who is doing the same.
3. Treat Yourself
Buy yourself some gifts! It is perfectly acceptable to buy something you want, something you need, something to wear and something to read. You don’t have to wrap them up but use them for the first time on Christmas day. Treat yourself to some stocking fillers too. How about showering on Christmas morning with a new Christmassy smelling shower gel?
4. Exercise Outside
Start the day with some fresh air and exercise. You could go for a long walk, or a run. Cleethorpes Park Run often hosts events on Christmas morning. You will feel like you have achieved something, your mood will have a boost and having seen people while you are out you will not feel so alone.
5. Volunteer
There are lots of organisations that require volunteers on Christmas Day. We love the work that the Grimsby Food Kitchen does but there are many others locally that need support at this time of year. Get in touch early so that they can complete any checks, referencing and training that might be needed.
If you can’t volunteer you could still be a secret Santa and make a donation to a favourite charity, even a small donation will be gratefully received.
6. Visit A Church
Allow space to have a spiritual moment. Lots of ‘first-timers’ and occasional church visitors are made to feel welcome at a church service on Christmas day. Check out your local church service times or tune into one of the many online church services that have been happening since the COVID pandemic.
7. Connect With Others Online
Even if you can’t be with family or friends, you can still use a video call to check in with them and wish them a Happy Christmas. You can even keep up Christmas tradition and play a game of charades during the call!
There are many other games that you can play on your phone with people you don’t know that will help you while away an hour or two.
8. Cook A Favourite Meal
You don’t have to go to the trouble of cooking a turkey roast for one and neither do you have to heat up a pre-prepared dinner for one. Take the time to cook a favourite meal or try that new recipe you have fancied for a while. Experiment if you like. This is one day you have the kitchen to yourself! Don’t forget to have a glass of wine and dance to your favourite, happy playlist while you cook!
9. Entertainment
Christmas day is the perfect day to catch up on that box set you haven’t had time to watch. Just don’t spend all day crying along to emotional Christmas films!
Instead, you could fuel your imagination and spend the day finishing that novel you started in the summer, and if you have time, start another one.
10. Plan For The Future
While you have the space to think, you could take the time to dream and plan for next year. Write down some goals for the year ahead and a short plan of how you will achieve them. Writing your goals down will help you focus your mind and you will be more likely to achieve them. Make sure you put your note somewhere that you will see it to remind you of your plan throughout the year.
