People Want Smart Technology Homes

It has been revealed that most people in Britain want to use more smart technology in their homes. A study by energy company E.ON shows that people want homes that are time saving, energy saving and fun.

Solar panels and/or an electricity battery storage system is the most popular choice.

• 44 per cent of people said that they are considering installing solar panels to their homes by 2020.
• 35 per cent of people questions responded that they would like smart lighting.
• 20 per cent would like a voice controlled smart hub.
• While 13 per cent are hoping for a charging point for an electric car.

The research also showed that:

• 41 per cent of people thought that having a solar panel and battery system would make a home more appealing to them if they were looking to move.

And of those who already have solar panels

• 76 per cent said they were saving money.
• 65 per cent said their home is more energy efficient.
• And 30 per cent of people said that they have seen the value of their property increase as a result of having solar panels installed.

What does smart technology in homes mean for landlords?

For landlords these findings are useful to keep in mind and to reflect on.

Since 2016, tenants have a right to request reasonable energy efficient improvements to your property. And landlords are not allowed to unreasonably refuse these requests. In April 2018, new rules around energy efficient rental homes will be introduced and your property will need to be E rated or higher. Getting some energy saving smart technology into your property now might be a good idea.

With the government ploughing millions of pounds into driverless and low carbon projects a charging point for an electric car could stand your property apart from the competition. A voice-controlled smart hub can be purchased for less than £50 and is a novel perk for tenants.
